Russian writer Anton Chekhov wrote stories and plays noted for their original narrative technique. Chekhov focused predominantly on themes and imagery rather than on plot development. Sonia, a character from Chekhov’s 1899 play, Uncle Vanya, utters the words in this selection (recited by an actor) partly as a prayer and partly as a hope. However, Sonia’s apparent frustration is meant to convey a sense of futile despair to the audience.
