A soft, white metal in its pure form, silver usually occurs in nature as a wiry aggregate associated with other mineral ores. Most of the silver produced today is mined in conjunction with lead and copper, both of which yield silver as a by-product. The Kongsberg mines in Norway are renowned for their specimens of delicate native silver wires, such as the ones shown here.
