Although his discovery has since been disputed, American explorer Robert Peary gained fame as the first man to reach the North Pole. Peary’s party included explorer Matthew A. Henson and four Inuit. In this audio segment, Peary describes his supposed arrival at the North Pole: “The main party under my command—six men, five sledges, 40 dogs—pushed forward by forced marches to the pole itself, while it arrived the 6th of April, 1909.”
