Panpipes are made of bamboo and are members of the flute family of musical instruments. The different lengths of bamboo in the raft panpipe, pictured here, produce different notes. The panpipe ensembles (rihe mumu) of Guadalcanal, including the ensemble heard in this example, have characteristics distinct from other groups from the Solomon Islands, such as the inclusion of drone instruments (bamboo trumpets and whistles tuned to the same pitch).
