The Vietnamese dan tranh is a 16-string box zither made with movable wooden bridges. Historically, it is the instrument of young girls, although it is heard in chamber music ensembles in Vietnamese classical music. The dan tranh is related to the Japanese koto, Chinese cheng, and Korean kayagum and is played as a solo instrument, in duet, trio, or in an instrumental theater ensemble.
