A unique Gaelic vocal music tradition, referred to as puirt-a-beul (mouth music), became popular in Scotland in the 18th century. The music was performed for dancing and was sung in a highly rhythmic style and without a text. The vocals were based around nonsense vocables and syllables that were easily adapted to various rhythms. This example is performed by a Scottish pop group called Mouth Music. Although the song is based on this vocal tradition, contemporary electric instruments have been added for a new, updated sound.
