The Saami, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia, have a unique unaccompanied vocal style called joik. At one time, joik was an important part of religious rituals, but today it is used as a means of personal expression and ethnic identification. A joik is a musical description of a subject which has inspired the singer, such as a family member or a friend. This example by Per Henderak Haetta from Norway describes another man who once lived in the region, Daniel Ašlaksen Sara.
