The Tuaregs are a nomadic tribe of Berber descent living in the north and central west of Niger. In Tuareg society, women occupy significant positions of power. Traditionally they receive noble titles and property rights, and their role in nomadic life is highly regarded. This example is from a genre of songs performed exclusively by women. It is a praise song that celebrates the exploits of famous camel-drivers of the tribe. In addition to praise songs, women also sing songs used in possession rituals.
