As in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries, a number of music ensembles traditionally performed for the royal courts in what is now Myanmar. This particular ensemble is called patt waing and features 21 drums suspended in a large circular frame. The drums are arranged according to pitch. The player sits in the center and plays the drums with his bare hands. The oboelike instrument heard playing the melody is called the hne and is featured in most of the court ensembles, especially the brass gong-circle ensemble.
