Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart enjoyed writing for solo instruments such as the clarinet, voice, and piano. It was with these instruments that Mozart was able to paint a clear and beautifully articulated melody while exploring the contrapuntal texture of blending the primary voice with a small orchestra of different voices. In this excerpt from the fourth movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A Major, the sensuous voice of the clarinet rises in glorious contrast to the strings then blends its way back into a dialogue of passionately intertwined sonorities.
