The Temiar are indigenous Mon-Khmer-speaking people living in the rainforests of central Malaysia. They claim they receive dream songs from spirits and say they are able, when singing them, to share in the spirit’s vision. This song is from a healing ceremony. Two mediums are accompanied by a chorus of women who respond to each line the mediums sing, playing rhythms with bamboo tubes. The mediums blow over the patient’s body to draw the illness out and yell to frighten the illness away.
"Healing Ceremony" performed by Apos Itam and Uda Pandak, from Dream songs and healing sounds in the rainforests of Malaysia (Cat.# Smithsonian/Folkways CD 40417) (p)1995 Smithsonian/Folkways, Inc. (BMI) under license from Marina Roseman in trust for the Temiar people. All rights reserved.
