Ritual Healing Music of Malawi

This drum and dance piece is excerpted from a healing ritual from northern Malawi in which the healer is possessed by a spirit who has been “heated up” by the sound of drumming, singing, and clapping. As in many African cultures, drums are often used to summon spirits and gods during a variety of religious and other significant community ceremonies. Their connection to the spirit world is both powerful and crucial to any healing or religious process. Musically, the rhythms are texturally layered and aesthetically enriched by dynamics of tone color, the jingling sound of rattles on the dancer’s legs, and the clanking of tin ornaments attached to large belts made of tin.
