Benga is the contemporary dance music of the Luo people of Western Kenya. The style became popular in the late 1950s and is driven by a deep bass rhythm and clipped, clear-toned guitar patterns. The interplay between the instruments is, in part, distinctly traditional: the guitar style mimics the sound and playing technique of the nyatiti (a folk lyre); the bass imitates a lizard-skinned drum that the nyatiti player would strike with a toe ring; and the snare drums reproduce the sound of bells, worn on the nyatiti player’s ankles.
