Soukous is the most popular Congolese dance music. Although the modern soukous dance band consists of bass, horns, various percussion instruments, and guitars, traditional influences can be heard in the way the instruments are played and arranged. In this example by composer/singer Pépé Kallé, the abbreviated interlocking guitar riffs are patterned after the technique used to play the traditional mbira (thumb piano).
