“We Shall Overcome” is one of many songs written during the sit-ins, prayer vigils, and poster walks during the civil rights movement in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Many of these songs were sung by black students and are loosely based on gospels and spirituals. This recording of one of the best known civil rights songs is performed by folk musician Guy Carawan along with the Montgomery Gospel Trio and the Nashville Quartet.
