Hammered Dulcimer

Hammered Dulcimer
Although the hammered dulcimer is a zither, it is also an ancestor of the keyboard chordophone and therefore a member of that family of musical instruments. It was introduced to Europe from the Middle East in the 11th century. The hammered dulcimer is a board zither played by striking the strings with small hammers, or beaters. It is related to the Iraqui santir and the Hungarian cimbalom.
