Devils Tower
Devils Tower, an isolated pillar of basalt located in Wyoming, shows characteristic columnar cooling features. Columnar basalt forms when basaltic lava cools and polygonal surface cracks propagate through the cooling rock. These are similar in shape to mud cracks. According to Native American stories, the vertical lines, or cracks, were the claw marks of a giant bear.
