Death of Captain James Cook
This illustration shows the altercation in which British explorer Captain James Cook was killed. The fight took place on the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii) when the explorers and the islanders argued over the theft of a boat. Cook landed on the islands in 1778. This painting is by English artist John Webber, who accompanied Cook on his last voyage. Webber was the son of a Swiss sculptor who settled in England.
