Josquin Desprez is one of an extraordinary group of composers from the Netherlands to gain recognition during the early part of the 16th century. At his time the mass was the primary vehicle through which a composer could demonstrate his craft. Feeling the influence of the Renaissance era, Desprez used secular tunes for some of his masses because he felt these songs allowed him a framework for organizing a long polyphonic movement. Desprez’s mass Missa Pange Lingua is a Gregorian chant (solo or unison chanting) based on a section of the Roman Catholic Corpus Christi mass.
