Classical Sarangi of North India

This improvised performance is based on a traditional north Indian raga. The melody, which is in free rhythm at the beginning of the piece, is performed on a sarangi (a fretless upright bowed lute with 3 main and 18 sympathetic strings) and is accompanied by the tabla (two drums with tunable heads played with both hands). Although the sarangi performs the main melody in this example, it traditionally plays the accompanying melody in classical and folk music.
