Organist William Byrd was one of the last of the great Catholic church composers of the 16th century. After several years as a composer of the court, he moved to the countryside to compose works under the patronage of Catholic nobleman Sir John Petre. Byrd composed many works for private devotional gatherings, but the two books of Gradualia, from which this example is taken, were designed for liturgical use.
