Danish organist Dietrich Buxtehude was one of the principal Lutheran composers of the late 17th century. He was widely recognized throughout Europe for his church music, composed for the Abendmusiken (evening musical devotions). Buxtehude is known for his joyful aria cantatas and lyrical treatment of other musical forms such as the spiritual concert and chorale. This example is from the solo cantata “Jubilate Domino,” in which a virtuosic contest is posed between the voice and the viola da gamba, a precursor of the modern cello.
