Johannes Brahms initially composed the Piano Quintet in F Minor (1864) as a string quintet with two cellos. Later, he arranged the work as a sonata for two pianos but changed his mind again, and subsequently he combined stringed instruments and piano in the quintet. The first movement opens with a restrained allegro in sonata form, from which the theme is expressed. Throughout the quintet, the intricate relationships between themes and motifs are explored, demonstrating a balance between emotional expression and logical structure in the composition.
