In 1850, German-born Johannes Brahms met the Hungarian violinist Eduard Reményi, who introduced him to the music of the Hungarian Roma (Gypsies). Brahms later composed his popular Hungarian Dances, originally written for piano duet. Hungarian Dances appears in four sets; the first two, from which this excerpt is taken, were issued in 1869, and the remaining pair followed in 1880. Although the dances are based on the traditional melodies of the Roma, they exemplify Brahms’s profoundly expressive style and craftsmanship.
