South African music is dominated by a strong vocal music tradition that is characterized by choral singing. The choral singing is often countered with a solo voice in a call-and-response fashion. Popular music forms such as Zulu jive include elements of this tradition as well as African American influences. This example of Zulu jive is driven by an underlying rock-and-roll rhythm countered with violinist/guitarist Noise Khanyile’s highly syncopated melody line.
