Koko

Koko
Studies of Koko the gorilla have greatly enhanced the field of animal behavior. Penny Patterson, a Stanford Ph.D. student, taught Koko to sign. She chose sign language because all primates, with the exception of humans, lack the necessary vocal apparatus for verbal language. Koko eventually used sign to ask for a voice. Here, Koko asks for an orange from Penny by extending her left arm away from her body.
