Nikita Khrushchev became premier of the Soviet Union in 1958. While in office, he boasted of Soviet military power, once predicting that the Soviet Union would “bury” the United States. Despite this antagonism, Khrushchev advocated peaceful methods for overcoming capitalism. He was deposed as premier and party head in October 1964 due to accusations of political mistakes, such as precipitating Soviet economic disorganization.
