Muhammad Hatta

Muhammad Hatta
As vice president under President Sukarno, Muhammad Hatta played a crucial role in declaring Indonesia an independent republic. In 1948 Hatta became prime minister of Indonesia and worked for Dutch recognition of the new nation. Disagreement with Sukarno’s policies caused Hatta to resign in 1956, but he became active in politics again in 1966 after Sukarno lost power.
