| First colonized by the French in 1604, possession of Acadia was disputed by the French and the British during the struggle for supremacy in North America. England was awarded Acadia in 1713 by the Peace of Utrecht. Acadians suffered greatly under the British on the resumption of hostilities with France during the Seven Years’ War. The region of Acadia is now made up of the Canadian Maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, and parts of what are now the province of Québec and the state of Maine. |
