| Born in Lithuania and raised in the United States, Israeli politician Moshe Arens emigrated to Israel in 1948 to fight for Israeli independence. Trained as an aeronautical engineer, Arens helped develop jet fighters for the Israeli military before turning to politics. First elected to the Knesset in 1974, he served as ambassador to the U.S., defense minister, and foreign minister, rising steadily through the ranks of the Likud party.
