Plateau Culture Area

Plateau Culture Area
Native Americans of the Plateau culture area in northwestern North America were master fishers who exploited the region’s rich salmon runs. Most salmon were caught in the Columbia, Snake, and Fraser rivers. Much of the catch was dried and preserved as a staple for winter consumption and trade. Plateau peoples supplemented their diet by hunting and foraging wild plant foods, especially the starchy bulbs of the camas plant.
