Southwest Culture Area

Southwest Culture Area
The vast desert lands of the Southwest culture area were home to both nomadic hunter-gatherers and sedentary agricultural peoples. North of Mesoamerica, agriculture attained its highest level of development in the Southwest. Farming peoples grew maize, beans, and squash, among other crops, and built permanent villages, many with large populations. Most Southwest villagers lived in pueblos, terraced stone or adobe apartment blocks built around central plazas.
