| Proposed in 1789 by French physician Joseph Ignace Guillotin, the guillotine was widely used during the French Revolution (1789-1799), first to decapitate members of the nobility and Roman Catholic clergy, and later to behead the revolutionaries themselves. The guillotine remained in use in France until capital punishment was abolished in 1981. This reduced model belongs to the Museum of the City of Paris, Musée Carnavalet, Paris, France. |
