Red Guards in Petrograd
During the Russian Revolution (1917), the Red Guard assumed the responsibility of maintaining civil order in the city of Petrograd after mobs of angry workers looted and burned police stations. Red Guards, like these men posing on the bed of a freight truck, enforced the will of the Petrograd Soviet (council) of Workers’ and Soldiers’ Deputies.
