Soviet military officer Georgy Zhukov served in World War I (1914-1919) and the Russian Civil War (1918-1922). He pioneered the Soviet use of tanks in several clashes with the Japanese during the 1939 border dispute in Manchuria. Zhukov rose to the rank of marshal for his role in World War II (1939-1945) during which he commanded the defense of Moscow and personally oversaw the final assault on Berlin.
