Frederick I, King of Prussia
Frederick III, ruler of Brandenburg since 1688, became king of Prussia as Frederick I in 1701, when Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I established it as a kingdom. Spending much of the public treasury, Frederick I supported the development of educational and scientific institutions.
