| As head of the Uganda People’s Congress, Milton Obote led his country to independence in 1962 and became its prime minister. He was ousted in 1971 by Major General Idi Amin but returned as president in 1980 after Amin was overthrown. A military coup forced Obote from office again in 1985. | ||||||
