| The legendary chieftain Hiawatha is said to have unified the Five Nations of the Iroquois in the 1500s and led them in the defeat of their rivals, the Algonquin. His story is told in the epic poem Song of Hiawatha (1855) by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This illustration is a scene from Longfellow’s tale in which Hiawatha courts the daughter of an Iroquois chief. |
