Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis was a major force in the resurgence in popularity of jazz music in the 1980s. His style blends a respect for tradition with the creative ability that characterizes jazz improvisation. “Solo” is an extemporaneous musical reflection. Marsalis’s use of quotations from familiar jazz melodic patterns, along with growls and moans reminiscent of the New Orleans style of jazz trumpet playing, demonstrates his virtuosity and knowledge of the jazz tradition.
