For centuries Tahiti has served as an entryway for European culture into the scattered islands of Polynesia. Explorers such as Captain Cook were followed by missionaries, traders, and settlers, who introduced Western customs and music to Tahitians. This cultural cross-fertilization continues today in a musical style known as Pan-Pacific Pop, which joins lyrics in local languages to Western-style song structures. The vocals are accompanied by both acoustic and electric guitars, ukelele, and indigenous percussion instruments.
