Mass Spectrometer

Mass Spectrometer
In a mass spectrometer, a sample of gas is ionized by an electron beam, and the ions are accelerated toward a magnet, which separates the ions according to their mass (upper right). Ions of a certain mass strike the detector; the detector is usually connected to a computer or other electronic device to process the data (bottom).
