| American politician George McGovern announces that he will not run for president in 1992. As a senator for the state of South Dakota and a leader in the movement to end the war in Vietnam, McGovern ran for president unsuccessfully in 1972 against Richard M. Nixon. A member of the House of Representatives from 1956 to 1960 and of the United States Senate from 1962 to 1980, McGovern tried to enlist the anti-Vietnam supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968. McGovern failed to win the nomination in 1968, but represented the party, along with vice-presidential candidate Sargent Shriver, in the 1972 election, where he was defeated by Nixon. |
