Bonampak Fresco Cycle, Mexico
Some pre-Columbian cultures, like the Maya of Mexico, painted frescoes and murals to record their daily life and history. In 1946 archaeologists found the perfectly preserved Bonampak Fresco Cycle (ad 792?), beneath a layer of calcification, near the Lacanhá River in southern Mexico. The fresco takes up several walls and tells the story of the last dynastic succession at Bonampak. This scene depicts Maya warriors standing guard over prisoners of war.
