De Soto served in Peru under Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish conqueror who accumulated vast wealth while subjugating the Inca Empire. In 1541, while searching for similar riches among Native American civilizations further to the north, de Soto became the first European to reach the Mississippi River. | ||||||
