Lázaro Cárdenas
President of Mexico from 1934 to 1940, Lázaro Cárdenas carried out a series of reforms that included distribution of land to the poor and construction of schools. Cárdenas nationalized the foreign-owned Mexican oil industry after a petroleum strike in 1938 and he maintained state control over large plantations.
