Known as a powerful public speaker, American politician Barbara Jordan is shown here at the 1992 Democratic National Convention, where she earned praise for her speech against racism and intolerance. A champion of social legislation, Jordan became a senator for the state of Texas in 1966 and served in the United States House of Representatives from 1972 to 1978.
