| Native to the islands of the South Pacific Ocean, the fruit of the breadfruit tree serves as a staple food in the region. The tree’s fruit grows to the size of a small melon and weighs from 0.5 to 2.25 kg (1 to 5 lb). The starchy pulp of the fruit can be ground into flour used for making bread, puddings, and biscuits. The famous 1789 British expedition described in the 1932 novel Mutiny on the Bounty traveled to Tahiti to collect breadfruit cuttings. |
