| In 1945 popular Argentine actor Maria Eva Duarte married Juan Perón, who was elected president of Argentina in 1946, and as Eva Perón became a favorite of her country’s citizens and an influential, although unofficial, member of Perón’s government. Her own experiences with poverty and the working class enabled Eva Perón to act capably as her husband’s political liaison with labor interests, women, and the poor. As a result of her social-welfare work with Argentina’s disadvantaged, she was affectionately known by the diminutive Evita. |
