In November 1992 Illinois representative Carol Moseley Braun became the first black woman elected to the U.S. Senate and the second black in the Senate since the Reconstruction period, after the end of the American Civil War in 1865. A distinguished public servant, Moseley Braun garnered the Best Legislator Award during each of the ten years she served in the Illinois House of Representatives.
