| Trained as a lawyer, Alija Izetbegović became president of Bosnia and Herzegovina in December 1990. When civil war broke out between Bosniaks, Serbs, and Croats in 1992, he became involved in trying to protect the republic’s Bosniak population. In December 1995 Izetbegović participated in the signing of the Dayton peace accord, which brought the war to an end. |
